Can this $11 cellphone from India change how people communicate?

India is one interesting place when it comes to cellphones. The options for handsets can seem limitless with companies rushing to get phone out to market in record time and at record prices.

The barebones feature phone segment is a huge market in India and much of the developing thanks in part to its relative low-cost.  Local cellphone provider, Mircomax is jumping into things with a phone that costs less than a Funko Pop Figure.

Known as the Joy, this  Micormax phone won’t ever be confused with an iPhone, Windows, or Android smartphone. The Joy is retailing for about $11 US, and is known as a candy bar style device (because of its shape) and comes with a 1.7-inch QQVGA (128×160 pixels) TFT display along with a 0.08-megapixel rear camera. You’ll also be able to expand the units storage to 4GB, and the Joy is backed by a 750mAh battery, for about 235 hours of standby time and 3 hours of talktime.

Looks good enough to eat.

What’s even more interesting (in a cost butting way) is that the Joy comes in a plastic bag with a little bubble wrap. It’s not a stretch to think that this candy bar phone looks like a bag of candy. For $11 this could make communication a breeze for those in the developing world and those not looking for a smartphone. This could really change the way people talk to each other now that most everyone can have a phone in the home.
