Call of Duty is dangerously close to doing to the future warfare thing what it did to the WWII shooter -kill it. With that said the idea of a remastered release of Modern Warfare isn’t a bad idea as it was a game changing shooter that shed the WWII motif and solidified the linear shooter by featuring huge set-pieces.

The game is so important and well-loved that when word dropped that a remaster was coming alongside Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare the gaming community went nuts. So much so that a lot of the remaster news has seemingly overshadowed Infinite.

Look, Call of Duty: Infinite will no doubt be a standard shooter that will rack in comfortable 8’s across the review world (can’t piss off the hand that feeds you), but my bigger issue is that the ‘Infinite’ subtitle sort of limits future games.

But enough about the stupid naming convention thing as the real news that is pissing off the world, myself included, is that that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered will not be a standalone product. That means that if you want to play it you are going to have to buy Infinite Warfare’s Legacy or digital deluxe editions.

The remaster won’t get a physical release, instead opting for a digital code that can be redeemed. It’s really odd that a full game that has probably taken months of work, by dozens of talented developers, with dedicated online servers is being used as a ploy to get you to buy another game.

If I were to take a guess using my industry senses, I’d venture to bet that the company is nervous about Call of Duty: Infinite and using the Modern Warfare remaster as a way to drive sales. Most people would say an independent release of the remaster would do gangbusters (they are probably right), but if those sales outpace the new game in the series things would look bad the company.

It’s an interesting state of affairs, but I don’t think the digital code will stay under lockdown as a bundle. Sure it’ll be that way at first, but after Infinite sales peter off I think we will see it pop up on digital stores.
