California Eyes Data Privacy Policy like Europe’s GDPR

Europe’s GDPR has already had a demonstrable effect on online businesses, both big and small. And naturally, California looked at that, and decided it was a good idea. Because why not drive all remaining business from your state? Either way, the initiative is headed to the November ballot.

One of the heads of the movement is Alistair Mactaggart, a San Fransisco real estate developer. He has, in fact, put $2 million of his own money into the movement. The initiative has also already gotten 600,000 signatures (roughly double the amount necessary to get on the ballot). Mactaggart was inspired by a cocktail party a few years ago. While talking with a Google engineer, the engineer told him that he’d be shocked to find out what they know about him.

To make a long story short, the privacy rights and consumer rights groups backing this seem to think it won’t have any more effect that make businesses do what they want. And it’ll be so easy that every business is going to do it rather than just state that they don’t serve California. Opponents, naturally, disagree; stating that it is a bit too broad and punitive to businesses. We’ll just have to see who wins out in November
