Bryan Fuller Opens Up About Star Trek Discovery

Star Trek Discovery

Star Trek Discovery is just around the corner, and executive producer Bryan Fuller has dropped some new details regarding the project. Speaking with journalists during Television Critics Association Summer Tour Fuller filled the world in on what to expect from Star Trek Discovery.

First and foremost is that the series takes place 10 years before Star Trek: The Original Series.

  • Season one of the show will feature 13 episodes in a serialized format. Each episode of the show will play out like a novel, “with each episode being a chapter of that novel,” Fuller stated to press. He went on to say that within that chapter there’s a beginning, middle and end. We will have episodes that exist by themselves, but are a part of a much bigger story.”
  • The show will have a female lead, but she will not be a captain. Fuller noted that “We’ve seen six characters from the captain’s point of view. In order to understand something that is so completely alien from her, she must first understand herself. That’s part of our journey on this planet, to get along, and that’s part of our journey in this first season.”
  • Fuller revealed that casting is currently underway
  • He went on to say that fans can expect a diverse cast and crew in the longstanding tradition of Star Trek, as well as lots of alien species for the crew will encounter.
  • Fuller also confirmed Star Trek Discovery would feature a gay cast member.
  • It was also revealed that there will be robots serving on Discovery in some form. Fuller also stated that there would be “more aliens than you normally do in a Star Trek show. We’re going to have new, exciting aliens and also re-imaginings of existing aliens.”
  • Talking about the story of Discovery Fuller noted that “There’s an incident, an event, in the history of Starfleet that has been talked about (in previous Star Trek shows), but never fully explored.” which the show will address.
  • He went on to say that Section 31 is not directly involved in that incident/event, “but that’s not to say that might not have some marble through the meat of our season.”
  • The ship design for the Discovery that we saw in the reveal trailer is still a work in progress. Fuller stated that the final design will feature elements of illustrator Ralph McQuarrie’s Star Trek: Phase II designs.
  • It was also noted that Amanda Grayson, Spock’s human mother is in some way involved with the show, but Fuller stated that “She’s not a central part of the show, but we love that character.
  • This opens the door for the possibility of TOS characters being featured in the show in some minor capacity as many were already serving in Starfleet in some capacity prior to their stint on the Enterprise.
