It’s pretty safe to say that the basic functionality of the car sun visor hasn’t really seen much innovation since its inception. And why would it? You put it down, it sorta blocks the sun (except when it doesn’t), and you see the road a little better.
Nonetheless, there are times when it doesn’t do such a great job; particularly in the gaps between it and the blindspot of your car, or when the sun is low enough that it shine beneath the visor, and there’s no way of blocking it without causing a safety hazard. And then this happens:
Well, it’s the latter situation Bosch set out to fix. Their visor is actually a see-through LCD, rather than a blade of fabric-wrapped cardboard. Using a camera and an AI system to handle facial recognition, it blocks out the sun in the precise spot that your eyes are. Overall, giving you a better view of the road.
Three of Bosch’s powertrain engineers started what’s been dubbed the Virtual Visor as a side project. In their free time, they worked on it, and harvested parts from old computer monitors to make it. It’s at CES right now, so lucky show-goers will get to see it in action… maybe.
That said, there’s no telling when such a device will become standard, or if it’ll see acceptance at all (tech moves in strange ways). But hey, maybe it’s just a few years off, right? You’ll just have to scorch your retinas via the mighty power of the sun in the meantime.
