Never underestimate the power of the internet, as Boaty McBoatface heads off on its maiden voyage to Antarctica. This little guy, who isn’t a boat or has a face, will chart te depths of the frigid Arctic region.
Boaty McBoatface came to be when the British government, apparently having no idea what the internet was, went online to hold a contest to name its newest research vessel. The internet being the internet, chose the name Boaty McBoatfac.
Again, the British government being the British government struck down the winning name, and instead when with the less exciting David Attenborough. But that wasn’t the end of Boaty McBoatface!
The name has been officially assigned to the unmanned research sub. Sure, it’s not as grand as a main ship, or a ship at all, but we soon might be seeing grand discoveries attributed to Boaty McBoatface.
The RRS James Clark Ross will be dropping off McBoatface to take on its most important of missions soon.
