New audio, Battle.net net (or whatever it is now) support, 4K visuals and both StarCraft and Brood War are going free.
The internet has been abuzz with talk about the original StarCraft getting a remasterd edition. It makes sense as the game is still instantly popular in competitive circles around the world. It’s so big that games are televised on national television to packed stadiums in some places.
One issue with this is that the game is so old, running it on modern computers can be difficult. This new remastered edition offers up some new features to bring the game into the modern age, even though that should have been StartCraft 2.
The game and expansion is getting a full graphical overhaul and will feature 4K graphics and those wonderful cinematics in 1080p. It also features all new audio and brand-new interstitial comic-bopok like scenes to flesh out missions a little better.
“StarCraft remains very popular, especially in Korea. It’s doing so despite legacy Battle.net’s aging infrastructure, and from the client perspective, graphics, compatibility, and online features that are not up to modern standards,” Classic Games senior producer Pete Stilwell explained. “We decided this was going to be our love letter to the SC diehards. So while the team dusted off the repos, rebuilt the pipeline, and rediscovered the codebase, we also spent hundreds of hours connecting with passionate and proactive folks all over the globe: The ones who have been keeping this game going. They gave us insight into the add-ons, game servers, and defined what made Brood War, Brood War.”
Just checking out the trailer shows a massive change that makes the game somehow seem fresh. It looks bloody gorgeous is what I’m trying to say. With so many needless remasters taking up space on digital storefronts, this is one that makes perfect sense and we are excited about.
