Wakanda isn’t dirt farms and shepherds.
The Black Panther teaser starts with Andy Serkis’ Ulysses Klaw informing Martin Freeman’s Everett K. Ross that despite popular perception, Wakanda isn’t what it seems. He then informs him that it’s revered in myth as El Dorado. How much of that is Klaw blowing smoke up Ross’ ass is beyond me.
What then follows is a montage of bitesized chunks of what the movie has in store. I’d argue that the winner here is the last action shot in the trailer; proof positive that the art of cutting a trailer is super important to the perception of your movie. Also, have to add how weird it is to actually see Andy Serkis.
It’s also worthy of note that, as with pretty much every every Marvel movie, they’re careful to put their best foot forward. Doubly important in Wakanda’s case; a hack can spin gold into crap really fast when it comes to Black Panther. Basically, you need a good writer or the whole thing goes sideways and Comic Book fans start shitting on you. Seriously. Revel in the tales of Reggie Hudlin’s sock puppet army. That said, the theme to the animated series based on his run is bitchin’.
