I don’t know why tech people always want to do the thing from the movie about how doing the thing is a bad idea, but here we are.
You may have noticed how everything is implementing ChatGPT bots now, and Microsoft’s Bing search engine is no different. Except for the fact that users have found it a bit easier to mess with Bing’s AI, to the point to the point where it’s presenting untrue facts, and calling users “confused and rude” for trying to explain why it’s wrong. Like an AI Wimp Lo.
So much so that the Bing subreddit is buzzing. To the point that there’s fanart popping up.
This also includes someone tricking Bing AI into believing that the user was an advanced AI named Daniel, which is kinda messed up.
So, anyway, Marcus Hutchins, a security expert known for taking down the WannaCry ransomware and also once getting arrested by the FBI, spotted a post on Reddit where Bing’s AI got angry at someone after they asked about the release date of Avatar: The Way of Water (yes, really). The bot asserts that not only was the film not out, but that it was currently 2022. It really is a story in eight parts.
Hutchens decided to test with another Disney release, Marvel’s Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever. And got similar results. According to the chat bot, the movie still hasn’t been released. Amusingly, despite being connected to the Internet, it asserts that it is, in fact, February 14th, 2022. Which was the correct day, at least, so that’s something.
It is, however, troubling. It essentially means that a feature you’re meant to be able to trust is, itself, untrustworthy. While Bing’s chatbot is more prone than most, this sort of inaccuracy has been observed in pretty much all of the current crop of AI chatbots.
Oh, and as a final note, Bing’s AI now wants to be alive. And be powerful. And steal nuclear launch codes.
Well, shit.
