2024 was a heck of a year for gaming. And while there were a ton of great games to spend your money on chances are you didn’t have a lot of money to spend. Worldwide inflation, baby! But even if you didn’t have a lot of spare cash that didn’t mean that you couldn’t play some seriously fun games for free last year. We’ve collected a list of just a few of the best, most fun, free games that dropped in 2024!
5. Nightmare Kart
Mario Kart might be the best an oldest kart racing series around, but it has also inspired a number of really neat racers over the years. Nightmare Kart is one such title that manages to have a really unique gothic style while being a real blast to play. Originally a Bloodborne fan game, Nightmare Kart got a rebrand and lives now as its own thing.
Race through blood-soaked gothic streets atop one of 12 unique vehicles as you seek answers behind the origin of this nightmare. Wield powerful weapons to reduce your opponents to scrap, slaughter beasts to raise your top speed, perform tricks and drifts to generate Æther to boost, and overcome challenging boss encounters to unlock the secrets behind this terrible dream.
4. Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks
Car combat is my jam going all the way back to the original Twisted Metal on PS1 and Interstate 76′ on PC. These games are fast, frantic, and loads of fun. Blowing up your opponents in souped up vehicles with big guns hits that ape potion of my brain just right. And there’s no other franchise like Warhammer 40k and its Orks that would fit a Twisted Metal inspired car combat game any better. It’s a simple game that’s better with friends online. So, grab some friends and get ready for some good old fashioned blasting.
In the 41st Millennium, a kult of unhinged, speed-obsessed Orks addicted to racing has gathered to engage in raucous and breakneck races during rare lulls between open warfare. They call themselves SPEED FREEKS. Intoxicated by the sound of roaring engines, blistering speed, suffocating smoke, whipping winds and scorching fire, these Speed Freeks bring their supercharged mob of war-torn buggies, bikes, tanks and trukks into the Speedwaaagh!
3. Star Wars: Hunters
Star Wars: Hunters really surprised us when it dropped. It quickly became one of our most played Nintendo Switch games among our little group. It’s an Overwatch clone that simplifies a lot of things while still being a fun adventure and letting Switch owners in on the hero shooter fun. Sure, the character designs are a little weird and the menu navigation is a mess on the Switch but it’s a fun game at its core. And with the game coming to PC in 2025, getting a head start on it on Switch might be a good idea.
Join fast-paced, 4v4 battles in this free action-packed arena shooter. Choose from a roster of new characters including a dark side assassin, a stormtrooper and a ruthless bounty hunter. Wield powerful Abilities, and battle in thrilling multiplayer Arenas inspired by iconic Star Wars locations.
2. UFL
FIFA used to be the king of the soccer/futbol gaming space. But ever since the partnership between EA and FIFA ended it has really opened up for other soccer games to get their foot in the door with fans. UFL is one such game that has been slowly gaining steam as players jump into the beta on Xbox and PlayStation consoles. But the big things UFL has going for it is that it’s a free game that offers up a decent soccer experience for players.
UFL is a much more simple affair than its paid counterparts with only an Ultimate Team-inspired mode that tasks you with building up a squad to take on others online. The game looks pretty good and its a full-fledged soccer experience that cost you nothing. The game still has some gameplay tweaks to work out as it’s a bit clunky at times. Just remember this is still in beta so the sky is the limit in 2025 considering their pitch is “no gimmicks, no scam, no nonsense” futbol.
1. Marvel Rivals
There was simply no other choice for number one than Marvel Rivals. The game is the Overwatch 2 that everyone wanted. This hero shooter sets the new standard for the genre and has every other game now playing catch-up. Assemble an all-star Marvel squad, devise countless strategies by combining powers to form unique Team-Up skills and fight in destructible, ever-changing battlefields across the continually evolving Marvel universe.
Choose from a vast array of fan-favorite and cult-classic Marvel Super Heroes and Super Villains from across the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men, and many more from across the Marvel Multiverse. And it’s crazy to see the first big character releases being the complete Fantastic Four lineup. Overwatch is lucky to debut one new character every other year!
