Batman Arkham Knight, the third and final entry into Rocksteady’s Arkham trilogy, has earned an “M for Mature” rating from the ESRB. This news is coming directly from Rocksteady themselves and surprised even them.
The two prior entries into the series, Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, both had “T for Teen” ratings issued from the ESRB, but Rocksteady founder, Sefton Hill says that the team didn’t set out to have Arkham Knight get a mature rating.
“From our point of view, we never wrote it or made it with a rating in mind. We never did that in the previous two games… We just felt that this is the story that we really wanted to tell.”
Hill addressed the fact that many younger player won’t be able to experience Arkham Knight, but says that the team will accept the rating and not be making any changes to downgrade the rating. He went on to say that,
“It would have been wrong to water down the game and deliver a story we didn’t believe in to keep the game ‘mass market’ or enable it for more people. We feel that’s the wrong way to go about it. We said we love the story and we don’t want to jeopardize that.”
While the mature rating won’t affect me, or anyone I know, I am glad that Rocksteady is sticking to their guns on this. I like seeing a major studio with a major franchise not get sucked into the ‘mass market’ looking only at their bottom line (I’m looking at you EA and Ubisoft). Batman Arkham Knight will hit store shelves June 2, 2015.
