Axiom Verge crashed on Epic Store because it was missing Steam.xnb file

If you tried to get in on the fun that is Axiom Verge over on the new Epic Store you might have had some issues. The game was released free, so naturally a ton of people went over to check it out.

But this isn’t an issue from too many people downloading the games or putting too much burden on th servers. No, the problem was that you couldn’t play the game because it was missing a certain file named Steam.xnb.

The game just seemed to be crashing at the same spot over and over again. And because there is no forums on the Epic Store people didn’t know what in the world was going on without checking the error log file.

To be fair, the missing file has nothing to do with the Steam store. The file in question is actually related to an audio file that plays on a certain level from steam pipes placed all over the stage.

The file was removed on accident by the games creator when prepping the game for the Epic Store. He figured removing all the files with the name Steam in them would be the easiest way to removed links to the Steam store, but forgot one audio file was, well, named steam.

“I was thinking it being Epic and all, I shouldn’t include valve’s dlls and such, so I excluded all files with ‘Steam’ in the name… oops,” – Thomas Happ
