AT&T’s Massive Deal Splits WB Games’ Development Studios

Frankly, nobody really knows exactly what’s happening yet.

AT&T has signed a massive $43 billion deal that will see the telecom giant unloading the bulk of their content divisions. This includes the likes of WarnerMedia, which manages Warner’s HBO Max platform, which will be brought under the aegis of a newly formed company. But as for Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, their game division? That’s a bit more complicated.

All we know, thanks to a spokesperson speaking for AT&T to Axios’ Sara Fischer is that some of these studios will stay with AT&T, and some will go to the new company.

In total, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is comprised of 11 studios: Avalanche Software, Monolith Productions, NetherRealm, Rocksteady, TT Games, WB Games Boston, WB Games Montreal, WB Games San Diego, WB Games San Francisco, and WB Games New York. And, essentially, there’s no real knowing which will be sent where. While it’s easy to imagine anything with the Warner branding going with the other Warner properties, there’s no real guarantee some might see a rebranding.

Essentially, the gist is that AT&T is, by and large, leaving content production by selling WarnerMedia to Discovery to create this new spinoff company. For frame of reference, this deal is so sudden, WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar was only made aware of it in the past few days, and by reports is currently negotiating his exit package from the company.

Needless to say, this may see the shelving of some games currently in development, depending on which studios go where.
