Strong enough to mine cryptocurrency, probably better used for something else.
I’m not going to pretend I know what I’m talking about when it comes to the neverending parade of alphanumerically named computer parts. I am, almost ironically considering the magazine I write for, hilariously computer part illiterate. But this one is special. Asus is delivering a motherboard that can support 19 GPUs. That’s like the number used for a joke about the amount of blades on modern razors.
The B250 Mining Expert is, ostensibly, designed for the cryptocurrency miner in mind. Which is probably one of the things that’ll be brought up when the machines rise up and enslave humanity. I could probably go on some sort of rant about cryptocurrency, but I’m not going to bother. Since GPU mining is the go to, it supports as many as it can; despite the fact that mining actually ups the market costs of GPUs. Nonetheless, it has all of the capabilities necessary to make it all work, though you will be spending on multiple power supply units to do it.
That said, such a device could be used for other things. Namely things like Folding@Home, creating and editing high resolution 3D graphics for animation and the like, or running Crysis at the maximum settings. There’s no doubt many applications that one could find for such a board.
That said, the B2560 won’t go on sale for at least a few weeks. And since Asus is likely banking on attracting more than just miners, the board is supposedly going to cost somewhat less than $150. And I can’t wait for someone use it to start the robot apocalypse.
