The Astronauts Unveil Dark Fantasy FPS ‘Witchfire’

Get your first look at the latest game from the team behind The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.

Witchfire is a dark fantasy first person shooter… and that’s all we can say at the moment. The game is being put together by The Astronauts, the team behind the hugely underrated The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.

Their first game was essentially a walking simulator, and so this new direction might seem a bit strange, but it’s not all that odd if you played The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. That game was begging to have some sort of first-person action elements, and actually felt more FPS than most FPS games, even though it wasn’t.

The three co-owners of The Astronauts were also the co-owners of People Can Fly, as well as the creative leads behind shooters like Painkiller and Bulletstorm. While Witchfire is also a shooter, we’re aiming to make a game unlike anything we have done in the past, both in tone and in game mechanics.

As you can see in the teaser above, Witchfire uses the photogrammetry tech that was previously used in The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. This tech allows the devs to 3D scan real-life objects – even entire buildings – and use them as digital assets in the games for unparalleled visual quality, and natural, organic look and feel.

That tech was one of the big reasons he Vanishing of Ethan Carter was so incredible on a visual level, and why it still holds up today. If the team can now get the story in Witchfire to match the visuals, like they have done before, then we are in for an FPS that that just might mix things up. And lord knows the genre needs a kick in the pants right about now.
