Apparently, The PS3 Is Not As Dead As You Might Think

PS3

Still has millions of active users.

Last year’s Insomniac Games leak saw a number of revelations, notably about the in-development Wolverine game. But one that saw little fanfare was the fact that the PS3 still has a small, yet undeniably sizeable, active userbase.

This isn’t necessarily too much of a surprise. While the PS3 had some fairly rough years early on, it eventually built up a library of games that aren’t available on its successor. Related to Insomniac, all of the PS3-era Ratchet & Clank games are essentially locked to the hardware; while you can stream them through PlayStation Plus Premium, you can’t buy or download them locally. Likewise, Metal Gear Solid 4 can’t be played on any other platform at all as of this writing; you can’t even stream it through PlayStation Plus. And the same is essentially true for a wide array of the system’s games, mostly those which likely weren’t deemed profitable enough for the streaming treatment.

As per the leak, though, there are people still rocking the PS Triple. As of February 2023, the data showed that the seventh-gen rectangle boasted around 2 million active users. Granted, this number could fluctuate between 1.9 million to 2.3 million users at any given time. But it’s still a considerable number for hardware that’s pushing drinking age.

Granted, this number of players is absolutely dwarfed by the number still using its successors; PS4 features over 70 million active users on a monthly basis, and the PS5 features over 37 million. But even if you take into consideration the fact that Sony has frequently remade or remastered games from the PS3 generation (in the case of The Last of Us, they’ve done so twice), they’re still only a tiny percent of the system’s library. So that ~2 million are the only ones currently able to play games like Tokyo Jungle through legitimate hardware. And probably hundreds of other games like it.
