Okay, for those of you too young to understand how this is even possible, a brief history lesson is in order. Way back when, in the days of the dinosaurs, Nintendo was the king of the video game world. The Super Nintendo (SNES) was doing great, but the followup console (the N64) was still a long ways away. With Sega doing everything it could to extended the life span of the Genesis with he 32x and Sega Cd add-ons, Nintendo figured a CD add-on unit was something to look into.
Nintendo tapped Sony to be the company to help produce a unit since they worked together before on the audio chip inside the Super Nintendo and a CD unit would focus heavily on sound instead of next-gen graphics. At the same time Nintendo asked Phillips to also provide a prototype unit as well as a way to see which company could make the best unit.
Fast forward a few months and Nintendo decides to abandon a CD add-on that Sony was working on and go with Philips instead. The man behind the Sony unit, pissed at how Nintendo screwed them, took the project to Sony HQ and convinced them to continue to fund the creation of the PlayStation, even though Sony didn’t really want anything to do with the video game market and the PlayStation is born. Phillips on the other hand didn’t end up making the SNES CD, but instead also were as dropped by Nintendo.
This led to Phillips also creating their own CD based console, the CD-i which failed completely on the market. But thanks to their original deal with Nintendo, Phillips was granted the license to create two Mario games, Hotel Mario and an unreleased sequel to Super Mario World called Super Mario’s Wacky Worlds. They also produced two Zelda titles that have gone down in history as being some of the worst games ever.
With that out of the way we can get to this new discovery. The problem is that we have no concrete information about this unit, so it’s best to take this with a grain of salt. Sure, the unit looks pretty real, and incredible to boot, but a stand alone Nintendo PlayStation wasn’t something that we were aware of, with the unit supposed to only be an add-on unit. Still, the person who discovered it had the following to say:
“My dad worked for a company, apparently one of the guys he used to work with, I think his name was Olaf, used to work at Nintendo and when my dad’s company went bankrupt, my dad found it in a box of ‘junk’ he was supposed to throw out”.
If this is true then it could change a lot of things as this would be the only prototype console in existence. It would also be quite strange that it wasn’t in the hands of Nintendo or Sony as it is a valuable piece of history for both companies. Instead it was just at the house of some guy that worked on the project. It’s possible but this all has a “to good to be true” feel to it.
We will keep you posted as the story develops and we get verified conformation from either Sony or Nintendo on this Sony/Nintendo Playstation. Check out the photos below:
