I get to say I told you so again, it’s a wonderful week.
Chances are, if you have a Funimation account, you’ve already heard. But for those of you in the back, since Funimation was bought by Sony, and Sony doesn’t need two methods of distributing anime to the West, they’ve decided to sunset Funimation, with services ending April 2nd this year. Oh, and also anything you bought through Funimation is no longer going to be honored on Crunchyroll, as CR doesn’t have any of that built into its services. In other words, kiss any of those digital purchases you made goodbye.
We understand that you may have concerns about your digital copies from Funimation. These Digital copies available on Funimation were a digital access to the content available on the DVDs or Blu-rays purchased.
Please note that Crunchyroll does not currently support Funimation Digital copies, which means that access to previously available digital copies will not be supported. However, we are continuously working to enhance our content offerings and provide you with an exceptional anime streaming experience. We appreciate your understanding and encourage you to explore the extensive anime library available on Crunchyroll.
Now, it is worth noting that Funimation’s digital versions were a bit different than, say, movies or shows purchased through a digital storefront. They were essentially connected to the physical disc sets or releases you purchased, allowing you to stream those shows or movies via Funimation’s streaming service. You still required an account to do so, though.
That said, this is yet another instance of the “all-digital future” sucking absolute noodles to the point people finally notice it. You will own nothing, and be absolutely furious that you can’t watch or play any of it.
