Agony is an upcoming first-person survival horror game set in hell

Agony

Agony look to take player to the bowels of H, E, double hockey sticks. I have yet to find a horror game that is, you know, actually scary. If anything, I think the plethora of people on YouTube screaming at everything has diluted the genre and given us a wealth of shitty walking in the dark simulators, designed simply for YouTube marketing pushes. Still, for every dozen Steam Green Light games there are a few that come out by experienced developers that understand that horror is not the same thing as jumps scares.

Madmind is a new development house that may just understand what it takes. The team is made up of former industry people with credits including The Witcher 3, The Division and more. It’s a good sign, even if the game looks utterly generic in terms of plotting. Agony is set in hell where you play a character with no memories. That sort of narrative has been done to death, but perhaps they can bring something new to the table.

The bit about escaping hell sounds like a lot of fun, but my concern is how long the horror part can actually last when you start in the scariest place imaginable? The game will need some sort of hook to keep things going, especially since you have no memories. I hope this isn’t just DOOM turning into a walking simulator. The teaser trailer above doesn’t tell us much other than they need to replace “Mr. Try Hard” on the narration bit. A deep dark voice is cool, but you are edging on comical, mates.

The game is currently being developed for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, which is cool as the horror game genre is pretty undeserved on consoles. Agony is one to keep on the radar, for sure, but it will need a bit more to get me excited about it like so many other people on the internet are right now.
