Adventure Time “You Forgot Your Floaties”

I don’t know if they planned on this episode of Adventure Time running right after Water Park Prank. Either way, the floaties in the title don’t refer to the previous episode anyway. Oh, no, there are deeper waters ahead. The promos promised a week of new episodes similar to the Steven Bomb that wrapped up season 1 of Steven Universe earlier this year. And they also promise something big.

Last season, we found out what actually happened to Simon’s girlfriend, Betty. She’s presumably been wandering around Ooo trying to find something to free him from the power of the crown. With no actual luck until now, mind, but she’s clearly dedicated.

Finn and Jake are wandering through a field, trying to pinpoint the exact location Glob’s helmet will drop. It impacts the earth, causing a small smoking crater. Before they can get to it, Betty swoops in and takes it, walking off. They decide to follow her.

They are surprised to find her walking into Magic Man’s house. While they stand around trying to figure out how to deal with him, Magic Man shows up and turns Finn into a fried egg, and Jake into a bowl of what I can only assume is soup.

“I hope you enjoy being inanimate as much as I enjoy being an asshole!”

He drops them on the shelf next to the tiny manticore, who came back due to his own cowardice and a prisoner complex. He shouts at Magic Man as the latter opens the way to the basement and crawls down. Betty asks him what all the commotion is about, and Magic Man simply tells her that the manticore is sad to see him go, implying that Magic Man will not be returning.

Betty has set up a large glass apparatus with three chambers; one for her, one for Magic Man, and a smaller one in the center containing Glob’s helmet. As they heat up the ovens under the larger chambers in preparation to transmute Magic Man into the new Glob, she asks him if the fact that his brother (Glob) is dead messes him up, to which he replies that nothing messes him up. She doesn’t buy it; he still has a picture of himself with Margles, and her experiences traveling the land of Ooo have supported her belief that all of the land’s magical practitioners are either insane or sad, with varying degrees of magical talent based on that.

One of the most interesting things about this episode is that we actually get a glimpse into Magic Man’s past on Mars. Turns out Margles was his wife, who was eaten/killed/spirited away by a devil analogue named Galb(?). To protect Mars against Galb, Magic Man built a planetary defense system that just happened to look like his dead/missing wife. This goes about as well as you’d expect this sort of thing to go, with Magic Man losing his nerve while installing her on Olympus Mons.

Another entry in the nightmare vault.

Ultimately, Betty comes out of the ordeal with Magic Man’s powers (and madness), Magic Man is, as he calls it, a “normie”, and Finn is made of bread, and soaked in (soup!) Jake. Betty teleports off, and Finn convinces the Manticore to fly him to Wizard City to get back to normal.

Finn has a few days, tops, to fix this. And he doesn't have eyes.

Final Thoughts:

–  That bit where Prismo totally blows it with Magic Man’s wish was hilarious.
–  “I see a crab emerging from a dark pool…”
–  Bread Finn is terrifying.
