I don’t know what it’s been with this season of Adventure Time. It’s been oddly hit-and-miss, and I don’t know exactly why. If I had to guess, it’s in preparation for the movie they’re doing? Anyway, Chips & Ice Cream happened.
The episode starts with what seems to be a horrible children’s puppet show. It stars Chips and Ice Cream, two little dongles who are only able to converse by saying their own names. BMO managed to drag Finn and Jake out to see the show with him, promising Jake that things get crazy in the second act.
It jumps to the end, which consists of Chips and Ice Cream kissing a bird. The “puppeteer” takes a bow, and the rabbit children and BMO shower him in coins. Jake is mad, because that was an indeterminate amount of time from his life that he will never get back. The puppeteer asks for someone from the crowd to invite him over for dinner.
The rabbit children all get picked up by their mother, leaving only BMO. He goes to Jake to beg him to let the puppeteer stay with them for dinner. Jake denies him, saying that the last time BMO begged him for something it was to see the play they just sat through, which BMO represented to him as a Broadway smash.
Apparently, BMO’s sad face works, and they invite the puppeteer over for dinner. He asks them whether the place they eat dinner has the moon shining through the window at night. You know, the sort of thing that should set off warning bells in pretty much anyone. Unfortunately for all of them, it does.
It’s night time in the tree house. The puppeteer keeps checking the window for the moon. Jake was all set to make sushi burgers, which would probably sound appetizing to me if I could actually eat seafood. He spent a lot of time molding the rice into buns. Anyway, the puppeteer asks for chips and ice cream instead. still no alarm bells going off.
BMO asks the puppeteer his name, and the puppeteer tells him it’s Morty Rogers. They dig in, and as Jake begins to eat, Morty removes the turban he had been wearing to reveal that the puppets were actually his ears. Morty chants a spell, and transfers Chips and Ice Cream over to Jake’s ears. Ecstatic over being freed form them, Morty Rogers jumps out the window and runs away. Jake decides to just roll with it, while Finn figures that he can just ignore them.
They go to bed. Jake tries to get them to quiet down by placing a towel over his head. Hey, it works for pet birds, right? In the middle of the night, however, BMO wakes up to the sound of Chips crying. He goes up to Finn and Jake’s room to find out why. Unfortunately, their chatty attitude wakes up Jake, and he decides to stretch them outside, where they won’t keep him awake all night. BMO runs outside to cover them with a blanket, and they break into a hauntingly annoying song consisting of their names.
The next morning, BMO is recording everything they say, while Jake prepares himself to go to the farmer’s market. Jake shoos BMO off his head, and he scurries over into the corner to replay everything he recorded. An overly long chip related gag plays out, and Jake covers his head with a scarf.
At the farmer’s market, Jake buys a couple of apples, while Chips and Ice Cream but into the conversation. Apparently, the land of Ooo has ice cream instead of Bertie Botts every flavor beans. By chance, Morty Rogers happens to be at the same ice cream booth that Jake was dragged to. He runs off screaming that Jake can’t make him take them back.
Morty makes it to the relative safety of his home, and begins to have a psychotic episode. Chips and Ice Cream dominated his every waking moment with their incessant chatter to the point that their absence has actually begun to drive him to insanity. Even music fails to help him. He makes a surrogate Chips and Ice Cream out of some old socks and buttons, but they ultimately fail him as well.
Finn can ignore them no longer. Jake explains that even if he could find Morty, he has no idea how to transfer them back, which causes Finn to facedesk. BMO runs into the room, announcing that he’s figured out their language. He begins to converse with them, and finds out what needs to be done.
Morty rises from a barrel filled with melted ice cream and chips. He begins to break even more, when he hears the lilting tones of Chips and Ice Cream. He follows the sound to the source to find Finn, Jake and BMO joining them in song. In a jealous rage, Morty chants the spell to transfer them back to him. As the leave Jake, BMO traps them in a jar, to Morty’s horror.
BMO runs outside and lets them go. Morty asks him why he did it, and BMO tells him that they wanted to be free. Morty apologizes to them for keeping them prisoner for so long, but also tells them that he doesn’t know what he’ll do without them. They kiss him, say their names again, and rise into the atmosphere to kiss passing birds.
I didn’t really care for this episode overall. On the plus side, watching Morty Rogers have a mental breakdown was pretty entertaining to watch. I probably wouldn’t chips and ice cream it again, though.
