Good Lord, it’s like everything is on fire.
Several companies and streamers have taken to calling out Streamlabs over a recent incident. Specifically, they’re accusing Streamlabs of plagiarism following the announcement of an Xbox-exclusive version of Streamlabs Studios, which is aimed at console gamers.
So what’s the hubbub? Well, there’s another company, Lightstream, which provides a streaming solution for console gamers as well. And as it just so happens, both sites have a similar layout; to the point that it’s fairly obvious to the casual observer that something non-kosher is going on.
Streamer iambrandon really highlights it in a tweet:
Streamlabs, of course, responded… and I’m pretty sure nobody bought it.
This really begs the question of, why? You could easily do what most film and television productions do and fill it with gibberish, and sidestep the whole affair. Why would you use reviews for someone else’s product as a placeholder?
It doesn’t get better, either. This caught the attention of OBS Studio, which Streamlabs OBS includes in its name. Despite the fact that OBS didn’t want them to include the name of their product in the name of Streamlabs’ product.
Regardless of what you think of the events by which he gained infamy, you kinda know you fucked up when Edward Snowden calls you out on your shit.
And if you thought all of that was enough, you’re clearly not familiar with the way things work around here. Because former Streamlabs employees have also come forward to claim the company responsible for unethical behavior.
A fantastic look for the company. And for all of this, Streamlabs made a statement on Twitter, primarily making note of the fact that they will be dropping OBS from their suite’s name.
Which, naturally, no one was going to tolerate.
Streamlabs has yet to respond since. I’d imagine they’re turtling.
