Is Windows 10 Ditching Internet Explorer For A New Browser Titled “Spartan”?

Spartan Browser

Windows 10 is just around the corner (I must have completely slept through Windows 9) and with it comes some much-anticipated upgrades and the return of the ‘Start’ bar. ZDNet is reporting that one of the big changes coming our way is an entirely new internet browser. We knew that Internet Explorer would be getting an overhaul (it’s about time), but now it seems that they will be ditching the browser altogether for Spartan.

While the underlying structure that makes up both IE and Spartan won’t be getting much of a change, what will be changing is Spartan becoming a much lighter browser along the lines of Firefox and Chrome. Spartan will also be getting support for extensions as well finally bringing Microsoft into the future time of 2012.

It doesn’t seem that Internet Explorer will be going the way of the Dodo though as sources (completely undisclosed of course) are saying that Windows 10 will ship with both Internet Explorer 11 and the new Spartan browser. Microsoft seems to be trying to slowly put Internet Explorer out to pasture and we can get behind that.

IE has made a number of improvements over the years, but the name is synonymous with everything that is wrong with big bloated browsers. Even if Spartan is using the same base for what it does getting away from the IE name is a good move. This move makes even more sense when you realize Microsoft has also skipped over have a Windows 9 looking for a new start.

Also, as a PC user getting Spartan is probably the closest we’ll ever get to getting anything Halo inspired on PC. For a company that makes operating systems they sure do seem inept at getting their own games on the PC.
