Street Fighter has been the king of fighters (totally nailed it!) since it hit the arcades and home consoles in the early ’90s. In some twenty years the series has only seem three releases with Street Fighter 4 last making waves back in 2008. Yes, there have been dozens of upgrades to each numbered entry with Hyper Fighting, Turbo, Championship, Ultra Mega EX Plus Alpha Revision 4, and so on. We even had the occasional side series in Alpha/Zero and EX. Oh, and there is always Street Fighter The Movie: The Game which is all sorts of crazy.
If there has been one thing that ties the world of Street Fighter together since its earliest days, it’s the fact that Capcom likes to get their seminal fighter on every system imaginable, even at launch. The Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo both got multiple iterations as well as all other home and portable consoles up to this past generation. Heck, the failed 3DO system probably has the definitive home version of Street Fighter 2 on any platform.
So it may come as a surprise to many that the next entry in the series, Street Fighter 5 will be making its home exclusively on the Playstation 4 and PC. This is a big shock to anyone looking to play Street Fighter 5 on their Xbox One in the near future, but even weirder is Capcom’s choice to favor the PC over the other home consoles. As a PC guy myself I applaud them, but it’s strange to see a fighter come to my desktop before all of my home consoles.
Of course, as these things go the term “console exclusive” can mean several different things today. As someone who is firmly against exclusivity of non first-party IPs, I think this is a terrible move for gamers and those in the fighting community as a whole. Odds are this will be some sort of timed exclusive before making its way onto the Xbox One and possible other platforms, but one never knows with Capcom. You can check out the trailer for Street Fighter 5 below and we expect to hear more about the details during Sony’s Playstation event in Las Vegas this weekend.

Also, is it just me or does the title card for Street Fighter 5 look like it’s saying Street Fighters with that stylistic swoosh thing on the letter R?
