I don’t even have any jokes for this, because this is genuinely sad news: after 29 years of production, Studio Ghibli is shutting its doors. When Marnie Was There, which was released in June, will be Studio Ghibli’s final film. The animation company is the home of Hayao Miyazaki, and has produced classic films such as Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo, Howl’s Moving Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Grave of the Fireflies, and Porco Rosso (my personal favorite).
Co-founder Toshio Suzuki said that a small staff will be retained “for Miyazaki projects,” which is a good sign, but Suzuki didn’t elaborate, and that statement is depressingly vague. We’ll keep you updated if we hear any more.
Thanks to Uproxx for the heads up.
