So, basically, that was a lie.
So, you probably use Incognito mode for a number of reasons on Chrome. And you may have believed the primer for the mode when it said hings to the tune of it not tracking you while you did… whatever it is you use Incognito mode for. Well, turns out that Google, at least, is still tracking you while in the ‘mode, without letting users know that it’s happening. And now, they’re going to have to deal with a class action lawsuit because of it.
The primary plaintiffs in the suit accuse google of misleading users, allowing them to think that their info was private as they were being tracked. Google has maintained that any using their service already knew that was the case, thanks to agreeing to their privacy policy.
As to how far the lawsuit could go, though, is still up in the air. While enthusiasts re aware of Incognito mode’s true purpose – keeping third-party tracking at bay – the general public probably isn’t terribly aware. And the suit could force Google to be more clear as to the purpose and limitations of Incognito mode. The whole debacle once again highlights the issues with companies burying potential issues deep in their product’s Terms of Use or Privacy Policy.
