On this day in gaming history everyone’s favorite mutants jumped into the world of 3D fighting games on the PlayStation 1 back in the year 2000!

X-Men: Mutant Academy is a 3D fighting game developed by Paradox Development published by Activision. It was released on PS1 and Game Boy Color and its release tied into the first X-Men film that was hitting theaters.

But even though the game was used to promote the X-Men film the commercials promoting the game used the animated series to pitch the game to fans as that’s what the game was based on and a more proven property at the time.

That said, the game’s characters can be played both with their animated costumes as well as their costumes from the 2000 film. Characters not present in the film were given costumes of a similar design to what others used in the film.

X-Men: Mutant Academy is a pretty fighter using six buttons: three buttons for punches and three for kicks. The game ended up being a pretty big hit and led to a series of sequels on the platform and on the PS2.
