WWE Confirms That There Will Be No WWE 2K21

WWE 2K21

Wrestling is an essential business, but video game development is not. Simple facts.

It seems the WWE 2K series won’t be returning this year. WWE interim chief financial officer Frank Riddick announced the news in the quarterly investors call on Thursday.

There’s not going to be a launch of a game this year.

Granted, there could be any number of reasons for this. It could be the pandemic making business way harder to conduct everywhere (except Florida, because Florida). But I’d think the more likely reason is that WWE 2K20 was a massive fuckin’ shitshow of absolutely epic proportions.

Neither Take-Two, nor 2K, were happy with Visual Concepts’ inaugural run with the franchise (previously, it was in the hands of Yuke). Per Take-Two Interactive (2K’s parent company) CEO Strauss Zelnick this past February:

While we’re disappointed that WWE 2K20 did not meet our expectations, both in terms of sales and quality, 2K is actively working with [WWE 2K20 development team] Visual Concepts to ensure that these issues are addressed in the future.

The WWE brand continues to expand worldwide, and there remains a substantial long-term opportunity to grow our WWE 2K series by improving the quality of the game.

As for what this means for the series going forward, who can say? But it’s a safe bet no one’s going to be clipping through the ring this year like they’re in a goddamn Bethesda game.
