Hyperkin Makes The RetroN Jr. Into A Real Boy

RetroN Jr.

When you wish upon a star…

Hyperkin once made a joke a few years back for April Fools day. Back in 2017 they jokingly showed off a product called the RetroN Jr., a product that would give your Game Boy games the Super Game Boy treatment. And now, it’ll be a reality.

The RetroN Jr. will take your Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games and upscale them to 720p for your flatscreen enjoyment. Which in a few cases, is a pretty nice thing. I’m pretty sure part of the reason my vision took a downturn later on is thanks to the likes of Castlevania: Circle of the Moon.

But it doesn’t just stop there. The back of the unit betrays its bonuses. Namely, the fact that they’ve added composite video ports to the back, in case you’re also looking for that CRT experience with your old games. Which is good; fake scan lines are an abomination upon all that is good. Also featured is the USB-C port used to power the system.

The RetroN Jr. will also come wit one controller; that said, Hyperkin has yet to decide whether that controller will be wired or wireless. The front of the unit will feature a 3.5mm audio jack, controlled with an oldschool volume wheel, no less. They also plan on including a Game Boy Link Port, though they haven’t stated whether it will function for head-to-head gameplay, or simply data transfer.

Right now, other details are light, though the RetroN Jr. is expected to launch sometime in 2020.
