The Escobar Fold 1 is a foldable phone that costs only $350, placing it far less than the competition that is the Samsung Galaxy Fold ($1,980), the Huawei Mate X ($2,400), and the retro-inspired Motorola Razr ($1,500).
“This is a completely revolutionary device in the mobile world, what Mr. Escobar has done is to cut out all retailers and wholesalers, giving that financial benefit to the consumer,” Escobar Inc. CEO Olof Gustafsson told the tech outlet CNET.
The Fold 1 folds like a book much like the Mate X. The phone runs on Android 9.0 and features a 7.8-inch AMOLED FHD Plus screen when folded up. It’s got a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Series chipset under the hood, 6GB or 8GB of RAM, and dual 16 and 20-megapixel cameras depending on the model you choose.
The website for the phone is a little weird, with dead-eyed models in their underwear showing off the phone in-between traditional promotional shots. There are also a number of shots of the phone being held inside what looks like a supermarket. You have models, quality shots, and one that look like they came off a review site. Very weird choices.
Then there is the YouTube promotional commercial (above) that the company released narrated by a man trying to sound like a cowboy, but instead comes off like an SNL parody of salsa. You know, it actually sounds like the guy who does the “Simple Rick” voice-over in Rick and Morty.
Then there’s the Victoria Secret reject models commercial (see below) that makes me feel like I need to take a shower after watching from how dirty it feels. Look, I don’t work for a smartphone company and I don’t know the first thing about the drug world, but you have a foldable phone that’s sub-$500. Let the phone speak for itself.
