2019 GAMBIT Holiday Gift Guide

Another year means another year the GAMBIT team has survived the inevitable decay of magazine publishing and the proliferation of review sites being paid by the companies they claim to review in an unbiased manner; that soft 7 rating keeps the lights on at so many places.

Our annoyance’s aside, it’s once again time to look at Black Friday, something as American as betting on Baseball and overlooking domestic abuse allegation in the NFL. God bless America and god bless Santa Claus!

Below you will find out pics for some of the best deals you can expect to find for about the five minutes they last online and in store. These stores get you in with the offer of a $99 65 inch curved LCD TV only to have one in stock, legally justifying the ad in your paper. So let’s get right into the action.

Editors note: we’ve narrowed down a number of our editors’ top picks that you’ll have the best chance of scoring on Black Friday at most retailers (unless specified).

Devil May Cry 5 (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

The family that slays (demons) together, stays together. That’s right, you, or your stylish loved one, can enjoy the latest character action game in the series that basically started it all. Hell, Black Friday will see it on sale for a crazy discount at most major retailers. And it’ll be a small price to pay for the most important game of this decade.

Code Vein (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

In truth, this is true Weeb Souls, anime and all. And that may just be up your alley, especially since it’ll be a while until we get Elden Ring. Well, unless you hate anime boobs (Amazing chest ahead). Perhaps the most important game of the decade.

PS4 Greatest Hits

If you are picking up a PS4 this Black Friday Sony has you covered on the game front. We picked out some noted titles we love but Sony also is discounting a bunch of their games in their PlayStation Hits line to $9.99 at GameStop, Best Buy and more. This is the perfect time to stock up on any great titles you missed so head over and grab a couple to stuff in those stockings.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night – (Switch, PS4, XB1)

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is the best Castlevania game that isn’t actually a Castlevania. Not that it’s much of an issue as Konami care little for being a game company. If you need a Castlevania fix then this is you jam, and for only $19.99 on Amazon you can’t go wrong.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Switch)

The latest in the Fire Emblem series just so happens to be the most modernized of all. Which earned it rave reviews from fans and newcomers. Chances are, if you want to try the series, or you’ve prepared yourself to see if you’ll bounce off of it again, this is your best bet. Truly the most important game this decade has seen.

Dragon Quest XI S (Switch)

Hands down the best version of this game, and not just for the fact that they paid for the Symphonic Suite soundtrack. Not only that, it’s a meaty RPG that’s basically comfort food to those old enough to remember the horrors of Dragon Quest VII’s job system. And it’s sad to realize that few people bought this version, which may be the most important game of the decade.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 (Switch)

Luigi’s Mansion 3 once again gives the green brother an opportunity to shine. And shine he does; while probably more Halloween appropriate, any fans of the original Gamecube game will be sure to love it. And why wouldn’t they, as this is the most important game of the decade.

Starlink: Battle for Atlas Starter Pack (Switch)

Starlink may not have seen the success of the Skylander’s franchise of toys, but it’s still a fun little game. This Nintendo Switch bundle is a steal at only $9.99 at Best Buy. Hell, the figure alone is worth that even if you never play the game.

Zumba: Burn It Up! (Switch)

This one might seem like a weird one but you have to understand that these dancing games just won’t quit. Hell, the last Just Dance game sold best on the original Wii. Yeah, the Wii from 2006! Zumba: Burn It Up! is dancing and a real workout so if you have a Switch in the living room and want something your mom can play too, this one might be worth picking up.

Kingdom Hearts III Standard Edition (Xbox One, PS4)

Crazy to think we waited two console generations to get this titles. Even weirder that it’s one of the lowest prices ever for a supposed landmark title. Still, if you waited on Kingdom Hearts III now is your chance to snag it for only $15 on your preferred platform at Best Buy and other retailers.

Horipad for Nintendo Switch

You might well ask why a gamepad notable mostly for its price point makes the list. Well, while it does lack a number of features the higher end controllers have (rumble, motion control), it does have one major thing going for it; it doesn’t use the same stick mechanism the Joy-Cons and pro controller use. As such, aside from being easy to find for as little as $20 new, it makes for a reliable backup should your other hardware start acting up. And while the D-Pad attachment isn’t the best, it’s easy to get used to. It’s a solid, though not luxurious, choice.

HORI Nintendo Switch D-Pad Controller – Pikachu Edition

I love my Nintendo Switch, but one thing that I hate are the annoying circle-buttons used instead of a traditional D-pad. It’s almost like no one can make a good D-pad in 2019. HORI seemed to listen and created their HORI Nintendo Switch D-Pad Controller that is a must for anyone playing anything other than casual puzzle games. This is a must anytime of year for precision and for those that love fighting games. Less that $20 for the yellow Pikachu controller or a red Super Mario one.

Dropmix Music Mixing Table Game

Harmonix went out a made a music board-game last year (we featured it on our wishlist), but it seems people mostly passed it up. Their loss is your gain as the $70 Dropmix Music Mixing Table Game is hugly discounted to only $10 as Five Below. This Bluetooth music board-game is a steal at the price.
