Nintendo Files Patents For Bendable Joy-Cons

We have a new Nintendo Switch model hitting shelves so it only makes sense that we’d get some sort of new version of the Joy-Con controller too. This, of course, would be for the standard Nintendo Switch as the Swith Lite features embedded controls.

Patents have recently been found that shows Nintendo is at least considering a new model of Joy-Con controllers that would bend at a hinge, allowing for what might be more comfortable and ergonomic grip.

The hinge looks to happen at the tops of the controller, just under the buttons on the right and under the joystick on the left. Nintendo might be considering this new design but that doesn’t mean it’ll ever see the light of day.

I don’t hate the idea

Chances are that Nintendo is just playing it safe with the idea so that they can get ahead of any third-party manufactures that might start playing with the Joy-Con design. We already have a number of companies doing such in various ways.

Sure, adding a D-Pad like the Hori Joy-Con isn’t a huge change, but it does show that manufacturers are listening to demand from consumers. The Nintendo Switch controllers feel fine in my hand but a clickable hinge might make more extended play sessions more comfortable.

You can check out the full patent here but be warned that it’s all in Japanese. And even though Nintendo has patented these designs you can bet that a factory in China is already trying to work out how to make these on the cheap so they can get them up on Wish.com.
