Disney/Sony Spider-Man Deal Falls Apart; Renner And Reynolds Go To Bat For Spidey

Spider-Man

Always hold out hope for Deadpool & Spider-Man.

By now you’ve heard that the deal between Disney and Sony for the MCU’s Spider-Man has essentially dissolved. Which is a shame, for reasons I shouldn’t really have to bring up. But I will:

Notably, Sony took a drubbing, because everyone assumed the breakdown was down to Sony and money. Their side of it, however, relates to Kevin Feige’s future involvement (or rather, the lack thereof) in the franchise due to the crunch of Phases 4 and 5.

Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise. We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film. We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him—including all their newly added Marvel properties—do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own. Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.

Honestly, I was personally waiting for everything to be out in the open before even writing about it, since my track record at firing from the hip hasn’t been the greatest of late. That said, having an Avengers star weigh in kinda tipped the scales. Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) added his thoughts to the matter on Twitter and Instagram:

On the other hand, you have Ryan Reynolds, whose role as Deadpool puts him in an interesting situation; Deadpool and Spider-Man historically get on like a house on fire. Now there’s seemingly no hope of a crossover between the two. Reynolds didn’t really mention anything about the fallthrough, until asked by a fan:

To which he responded:

Tom Holland, however, has kept mum on the whole thing. Though he did allegedly unfollow Sony on Instagram.

But who knows? Maybe it’ll all work out before Phase 5 comes along. Hope springs eternal, right?
