Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games 2020 To Feature 2D Characters/Events

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games was a huge deal when it dropped and a bunch of years ago. Modern gamers won’t think much of it, but for those of us who grew up in the heated Nintendo vs Sega war, seeing the worlds collide was mindboggling. Not to mention that the game was pretty good and a bunch of silly fun.

Now that the game has been around for a long time and seen a number of Olympics come and go, people have sort of moved on from the shock value us old-timers felt. The games have been hit-or-miss over the years, but it looks like the upcoming Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is about to get people excited once again.

Calling back to those days when Sega and Nintendo lived in the two-dimensional a number of events in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will be rendered in gorgeous 2D. There will be 10 sprite-based events that remind me a lot of Track & Field from the days of the NES.

Seeing the 2D characters rendered in glorious 8 and 16-bit versions feel really nostalgic. I haven’t cared about this series since the original, but I’m ready to give it another go after this announcement.
