Nintendo To Fix Joy-Cons For Free, Refund Previous Repair

Sweet.

Well, people weren’t entirely happy with having to pay for the repairs on their Joy-Cons; mostly due to the fact that they’re more costly than usual for a standard controller, as well as the possibility of getting back a pair that still experienced drift.

As such, per Vice, Nintendo has updated their customer service manuals to instruct customer support members to repair controllers for free. Moreover, they’ll be issuing refunds for those that previously paid to have the issue fixed.

Per the Vice article, “a source familiar with Nintendo’s updated customer support documentation” said that their documentation now includes the following:

Customers will no longer be requested to provide proof of purchase for Joy-Con repairs. Additionally it is not necessary to confirm warranty status. If a customer requests a refund for a previously paid Joy-Con repair […] confirm the prior repair and then issue a refund.

This is actually a big deal, since the cause of the issue seems to be due to an unfortunately flawed board in the analog stick unit. As to the sudden change, it’d be hard not to imagine the impending class-action suit over the issue had no play in it. Either way, though, getting free repairs on this, even outside the warranty, is a pretty sweet deal.
