They’ve lost their connection to the SD Association.
Huawei hasn’t been having a good time of it. And things just got worse for them. They are no longer allowed to give their devices SD card support, as they’ve been banned from the SD Association. Which means that SD and microSD cards will no longer be usable with Huawei devices.
The SD Association is a trade group that standardized SD technology in the industry. And recently, they were ordered by the US Department of Commerce to drop Huawei from the association. This is due to the fact that the Department of Commerce recently added Huawei to their “Entity List”; a list of companies the department considers likely to undermine American interests. This listing also prevents Huawei from receiving items or funding without government approval. Per Android Authority, Huawei offered the following statement on the matter:
The use of SD cards on Huawei smartphone won’t be affected. Consumers can continue purchasing and using these products.
While being dropped from from the SD Association is certainly a blow, You’ll note from their statement that Huawei isn’t, publicly at least, terribly concerned by the situation. And that’s mostly due to the fact that they’ve been moving towards their own, proprietary, “Nano Memory Cards”.
This is, however, yet another blow to the company. Aside from the executive order forbidding the sale of devices from companies that present risk, they’ve also had their devices removed from Android support by Google. Moreover, Intel, AMD and Qualcomm have cut off supplies of chips to the company.
