“Why did you leave Starfleet?”
Here is our first look at the upcoming Star Trek: Picard series coming to CBS All Access. The teaser trailer should pull at the heartstrings of TNG fans as it picks up where we last saw our favorite captain in the TNG series finale.
The series looks to pick up 15 years after Picard left Starfleet for unknown reasons. He’s on his vineyard living a seemingly peaceful life, only to be shown in front of what would seem to be Starfleet Command answering questions.
What do you think of the trailer and what do you think it means for this much-changed Picard? Did he leave Starfleet because Starfleet didn’t need him, or because what Starfleet had become post TNG didn’t align with his character?
In the time of TNG, Starfleet was fat, lazy and unchallenged by the threats of the Alpha Quadrant. The Enterprise and the Galaxy Class, the pride of the service was a family ship. But while TNG showed us a utopian view of humanity, DS9 showed that humanity wasn’t as evolved as TNG claimed it was.
The Borg, the Dominion and all manner of warmongering admirals left Starfleet in a much different place, a place that may no longer have been the Starfleet that Picard believed in. Maybe, as a fan, I’m reading too much into things, but I know I that I’m excited for a Star Trek series not based on a ship and her crew, and instead on a more introspective look at a man and his place in this universe.
