Pokémon Mobile Game Coming This Year

“Catch ’em all” has never sounded more expensive.

Per DeNA’s 2018 operating results, it seems theres a “new and exciting” Pokémon mobile game on the way to iOS and Android.

If you’ve followed most of Nintendo’s mobile offerings, you’re probably familiar with DeNA. They run Fire Emblem Heroes, Super Mario Run, and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp for the company. They’re also helping on the upcoming mobile Mario Kart Tour.

The note comes on page 11 of the report:

Plan to launch a new and exciting smartphone game this fiscal year based on the globally popular Pokémon franchise, in partnership with The Pokémon Company

More details, such as information about the game and launch timing, will be announced later

If I had to guess, it could be a Gacha-type of deal, like Fire Emblem Heroes; then again, for a franchise like Pokémon, that seems unlikely. It may be more likely that the business model has better catching materials for sale, whereas the basic poké balls and even some premium ones are available in limited (probably daily for basic) quantities.

Either way, it may be a while before we see it. The Japanese business year begins on April 1st and ends on March 31. So this could happen anywhere from now to early next year.
