Tesla Explodes In Surveillance Video From Shanghai Parking Lot

Tesla

And boom goes the dynamite Tesla.

Tesla touts the safety of their cars, stating that they’re less likely to catch fire than the average car. But a recent video that went viral kind of undermines that stance.

The video shows a Tesla S parked in a garage in Shanghai. Mere seconds in, the car bursts into flames. And the aftermath is nothing but scorched cement and baked cars. The video set Chinese social media on fire (ha!). Courtesy of Twitter user Jay in Shanghai, we have that video.

Tesla made a response on Weibo, the Chinese social media site where much of the commotion went down. The response, also courtesy Jay in Shanghai:

After learning about the incident in Shanghai, we dispatched a team to the scene last night as soon as possible. We are actively liaising with the relevant departments and cooperating with the verification of the situation. According to the current information, there we no casualties.

Which is pretty much what they said to Reuters:

We immediately sent a team onsite and we’re supporting local authorities to establish the facts. From what we know now, no one was harmed.

While it’s nice to hear that no one was hurt, it really is somewhat harrowing. That Model S went up in a matter of seconds; imagine the nightmare of being inside one when that happens. Here’s hoping Tesla figures out just what went wrong and ensures it doesn’t happen again.
