Dwarf Fortress Is Headed To Steam

Dwarf Fortress

All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with graphics. It menaces with spikes of mod.

Drop all of that stupid shit you’re doing and marvel. Marvel! I say. For we have been graced with a present most precious. Dwarf Fortress, one of the most detailed games that you will ever hear of or play, is headed to Steam. But that’s not all. The Steam (and Itch.io) version of the game will come with a graphical upgrade for all you dipshits that don’t understand what an “E” stands for, or why you should fear, or at least, respect it. It’ll also be moddable, and feature a streamlined interface for you hammerhanded lot that don’t want to spend hours in a tutorial learning keyboard shortcuts to make your life easier.

Kitfox Games (Moon Hunters, Boyfriend Dungeon) are publishing the release and working with artists the graphics as well as a composer for the new music (not like the original was busted or anything). The graphics will be based on a 32×32 tileset, and are the work of a collaboration between two long-time Dwarf Fortress modders. Otherwise, it will be the same game that essentially saw the horrors of Koganusân (Boatmurdered, for those not familiar) and the rise of Cacame Awemedinade, The Elf King of the Dwarves. Except you’ll be paying $20 for it. Which, honestly? Is less than you should be paying for it.

That said, the traditional flavor of the game will still be free. And both will receive the same updates that Tarn Adams has in the pipeline.

It remains to be seen if the game will still make parts of even gaming quality super rigs melt off while trying to deal with cats. But, hopefully, mod support will fix it? Probably not, but dwarven ingenuity is not to be underestimated.
