John Romero returns with ‘Sigil’ a new chapter of the original ‘Doom’

John Romero is back and is sticking to what he knows best –Doom. On the 25th anniversary of the release of Doom, the game that changed the gaming landscape forever, is getting a new ‘megawad’ in the form of Sigil from John Romero.

This new modification to the original Doom adds nine new single-players levels for you to explore, as well as an equal amount of deathmatch levels to challenge you friends in. Even better, is that all of this Doom action will be released free sometime this February.

Romero is keeping this mod in line with the original game, essentially making it the fifth episode of Doom. Sigil will pick up right where the original entry left off, simply adding new content to the classic shooter. Just remember that this is a mod and isn’t canonically connected to the Doom franchise.

Still, this is as close as a fan-game can get, considering the fan making it is the person that helped create the original game. And while the mod itself is free, there will be a special boxed edition with goodies for hardcore fans.

Romero stated that: “Like all other mods, it will be free. However, I also wanted to do something special, so we decided to also create an incredible package that fans would love and include an amazing soundtrack by Buckethead. Everything that’s included in the fan boxes is really cool to show off, and Christopher Lovell’s art is fitting for such a hellish game. The Beast Box has to be the most evil game box I’ve seen.”
