Swatter Pleads Guilty To Hoax That Killed Kansas Man

Swatting

Enjoy prison!

Tyler Barriss, known for the Swatting case last year which resulted in the death of unrelated Kansas resident Andrew Finch, has plead guilty to that, as well as many other hoax calls. Among which were a number of bomb threats, as well as obstruction of mass shooting cases, and more.

Under the plea agreement, Tyler Barriss, 25, of Los Angeles, will serve between 20 and 25 years in prison for making his false reports. Prosecutors also brought up  the large number of other fake emergency calls Barriss had made. Those include mass shootings, bomb threats and a host of other false criminal activity set in schools, shopping malls, and even the FBI. However, no one was injured or killed in those other instances; that’s where the Wichita, Kansas event stands out.

Barriss plead guilty to guilty to cyberstalking, conspiracy and making a false report resulting in a death in that case. In addition, the plea also encompassed the large number of other hoaxes, notably including a bomb threat to the FCC on the day they were to vote on Net Neutrality. He’d been responsible for dozens of false reports across California and Washington D.C. The U.S. Attorney for Kansas, Stephen McAllister, gave the following statement:

Without ever stepping foot in Wichita, the defendant created a chaotic situation that quickly turned from dangerous to deadly. His reasons were trivial and his disregard for the safety of other people was staggering.

And this isn’t his first rodeo. He was convicted and sent to prison in 2015 for calling in a bomb threat to ABC 7 in Glendale, California. And he learned nothing from it, as he was out 2 years after and went back to his old ways. So there you have it. It’s really no surprise that he’s going away now.
