The Last Remaining Secret In Doom 2 Has Been Uncovered

Doom 2

Rip and tear!

Well, it seems that the last remaining Doom 2 secret has finally been found. Doom speedrunner Zero Master uncovered the previously considered impossible secret without the use of cheats, thus earning praise from John Romero himself.

While the secret had been known about, it was previously considered impossible to get through normal means. From the description to Zero Master’s video of the secret below:

In other words, a secret can only be triggered if doomguys center is within the secret area and if he is on the same height as the secret sector. The second being impossible because doomguy is always lifted up to the teleporter floor height when his center is either exactly on or over the secret sector.

In essence, since the secret was placed beneath the teleporter pad, and since there’s no way to stand on the ground beneath a teleporter pad, the secret was “impossible” to get under normal circumstances. But Zero Master, undeterred, found a way. And that way involved luring a pain elemental to the location and using the knockback from its attack to nudge him into the secret’s location.

As such, the Doom Wiki’s entry for MAP15: Industrial Zone has been amended:

It has been shown possible to achieve secret #4 via obscure game mechanics, by luring a pain elemental to the location and allowing the door to try to close onto the player’s head as the pain elemental attempts to spawn a lost soul. While the mechanism is not currently completely understood (it may be related to the phenomenon of sprites flickering across ledges or lifts), the resulting series of clipping operations will temporarily lower the player’s z coordinate to the lowest floor underneath the player, causing the secret to be tallied.

All of this comes on the heels of the revelation that Doomguy could conceivably become Pope.
