Rugrats Reboot Series, Live-Action/CGI Movie in the Works

Rugrats

I’m not Stu!

Remember how Rugrats was one of Nickelodeon’s longest-running shows, until Spongebob came along? Well, Nickelodeon sure remembers. And much like with Rocko’s Modern Life and Hey Arnold!, it’s getting the treatment.

According to Variety, Nickelodeon an Paramount Pictures have ordered a 26 episode relaunch of the series. The series will be animated in Burbank, California, and Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain are returning to executive produce. And yes, production is already underway.

Rugrats is hands-down one of the most celebrated cartoons in TV history, and we are thrilled for a whole new audience to meet these iconic characters in brand-new adventures. What was true in 1991 when the original show premiered is still true today: kids are fascinated with the world of babies. We can’t wait for today’s kids to meet Tommy, Chuckie and pals.

– Sarah Levy, COO of Viacom Media Networks, interim president of Nickelodeon

Also, Paramount Players (Paramount’s film division created to make movies of their Viacom properties) has given the greenlight to a live-action/CGI hybrid film featuring the characters. Which I’m sure will provide the internet with horrifying stills for memes. Prove me wrong, Paramount Players; the ball’s in your court. The movie will be written by David Goodman (Family Guy).

Now feels like the ideal time to reintroduce this iconic cast of characters to a whole new generation of young fans. Kids who grew up with Tommy Pickles and the “Rugrats” crew will now be able to share that experience with their own children.

– Brian Robbins, Paramount Players President

So, now that Klasky Csupo is back in business, what’s the over-under on Duckman coming back? I know I’ll regret saying this, but I don’t care what necromancy is involved in making it happen. He’s the hero we need.
