Sony “Confident” It’ll Find A Cross-play Solution

Sony

Conveniently ignores the fact that it skipped the easy option a year ago.

If you’ve been paying attention, you might have noticed the ongoing cross-play saga between Microsoft and Sony. After all, Microsoft and Nintendo practically rubbed it in everyone’s faces with that Minecraft trailer. There’s also the undeniable fact that the current standing Fortnite situation on PS4 is incredibly irritating. It’s a third party game that requires a third party account to play, but if you enter that account information on PSN, you can’t use it again on devices other than the PS4, PC and mobile. Essentially, holding that account hostage in a way no other platform does. It’s incredibly shitty, and surprising from the company that was ahead of their closest competition anyway.

But don’t worry about all of that. Because Sony’s working on finding a solution to the problem that will be “accepted” by the PS4 community. Sony Interactive Entertainment America CEO Shawn Layden says that they’re looking into “a lot of possibilities”. From an interview with Eurogamer:

We’re hearing it. We’re looking at a lot of the possibilities. You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I’m confident we’ll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business.

Which is a massive load of shit. Because I’m 100% sure that the community is not remotely capable of stopping Sony from doing a goddamn thing. This is a thing Sony doesn’t want to do out of spite, and it’s going to take literally everyone calling them out on this for them to actually do something about it.

I mean, Jesus, Psyonix wants Rocket League to be a multiplatform, cross-play game. They say it’s literally the push of a button away from happening, too. And of all of them, Sony is the only one refusing to play ball. And if I had to guess why, it’s because they then wouldn’t have any control over it. As a matter of fact, former Sony online Entertainment president John Smedley is pretty sure it’s all about cash.

When I was at Sony, the stated reason internally for this was money.

They didn’t like someone buying something on an Xbox and it being used on a PlayStation. simple as that. dumb reason, but there it is.

And, to nail a final point home, it’s not that they’re explicitly averse to cross-play. Because most of these games already have it between PS4 and PC (and/or mobile). So, to me at least, it seems an incredibly petty way of getting customers riled up. Even then, I’d probably get a PS4 if I had the money. But I wouldn’t link my Epic account to it.
