Fails spectacularly.

Fame isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be. It definitely wasn’t for YouTubers Gavin Free and Megan Turney this week. They were forced to hide in a closet as a deranged, armed fan broke into their home last Saturday, February 10th.

Christopher Giles, said fan, was described by police as “single, lonely and disturbed”. He had become obsessed with Megan Turney, and in turn, resented Free for his lifestyle and success, according to detectives. This led him to drive 11 hours from Albuquerque to Austin and attempt to break into their home.

According to the search warrant affidavit, Free and Turney woke to the sound of breaking glass and a gunshot. They did the smart thing, hiding in a closet and calling 911. After 10 minutes of searching for the couple, Giles gave up and returned to his car, only to run into the Austin Police.

As he was backing out of the driveway, the police stopped him. Hearing a single gunshot from within the car, one officer returned fire, possibly hitting and killing him. Upon opening the car door, they found a .45 caliber handgun near his hand. Turney and Free were unharmed. The medical examiner hasn’t ruled out the possibility that Giles shot himself.

Detectives found a number of disturbing things on his phone. Comments about the YouTubers, along with over thousand notes, many disparaging about Free. The Albuquerque Police Department detectives who searched his home concluded that he lived alone, and that he was “an avid player of video games and was known for watching YouTube videos that were centered on his hobby.”
