Modding is something that almost immediately crops up on consoles nowadays, though it usually takes a breakthrough to blow it wide open. And that’s exactly what’s happened with the PS4. Over the last few months, modders have been finding exploits and firmware vulnerabilities that allow them to run games from backups.While, with the help of the utility PS4HEN, they have previously been able to run pirated PS4 games, there’s now a new wrinkle; they can run PS2 games from backups as well.
According to Spanish site Elotrolado,a new tool by cfwprophet allows users to run PS2 backups on the PS4. The tool, titled PS2 Pub Gen, is based on the work of another modder named flatz, who used the base work to run PS4 backups on the system. According to him, he was able to run Shinobi and Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil. The latter is important, as the PS3’s PS2 emulation wasn’t able to run it as well as the PS4’s. Coincidentally, cfwprophet expects the possibility of permanent custom firmware for the system this year.
That all said, this pretty much voids the warranty as it violates the ToS for the system. Not to mention that the legality overall is… murky to say the least. So, it might not be something you’d want to do to a primary console unless you’re brave, or loaded with dough.
