Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut Lost River (formerly known by the much cooler title How to Catch a Monster) is at Cannes right now, and the first footage has been released. It’s definitely…something.
Here’s the plot description, courtesy of Talkbacker:
A genre-spanning fantasy noir, Lost River sees young Billy (Iain De Caestecker of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD) and his mother (Christina Hendricks) swept into a fantasy underworld. Also starring Matt Smith, Saoirse Ronan and Ben Mendelsohn.
Tell me if you see any hint of that in this clip.

Gosling has said that his influences are Nicolas Winding Refn (who directed him in Drive and Only God Forgives) and Derek Cianfrance (who directed him in Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines). Looks to me like he forgot to mention peyote.
