No word on the superstitious cowardly lot.
Matt Reeves has been firing on all cylinders for the recent Planet of the Apes movies. Naturally, he hasn’t had much time to devote to the Batman movie, which he’s slated to direct. But in a recent interview with New Trailer Buzz, he did respond to a question about The Batman. He mentioned that he was equally fascinated with Batman in his youth as he was with Planet of the apes, and said:
“I see a parallel, emotionally, between Caesar and Batman in that they’re both characters who are tortured and trying to sort of grapple within themselves to find a way to do the right thing in a very imperfect, and to some degree corrupt, world…” “…And so it’s really that emotionality that I’m interested in.”
Further more, he let on the kind of film he wants The Batman to be:
“There’s a chance to do an almost noir driven, detective version of Batman that is point-of-view driven in a very very powerful way, that will hopefully connect you to what’s going on inside of his head”
This sounds pretty good, since you rarely get the detective stories fro these characters in film form. The die for pretty much every superhero film was essentially cast back when Tim Burton’s Batman was released in 1989. You set up the players, they struggle against each other a bit, the good guy wins and the villain is hauled off to jail/dead, the end. And in a bit of irony, that film was probably the closest to Batman’s detective roots. So the idea of having an actual detective story for a Detective Comics character is scintillating. Here’s hoping he pulls it off with The Batman.
