Sony gave a tight presentation with no fluff.
It’s not an exaggeration to say that Microsoft’s presentation was… lacking this year. But would Sony do better?
Yes. Yes, they would.
It’s an actual highlight that Shawn Layden only appeared on stage twice, and only to introduce things as necessary. The rest of their presentation was entirely focused on their games.
And Sony didn’t try to sell us a car.
Uncharted The Lost Legacy kicked things off with some live music. It then proceeded to give you every reason to want it. But it was far from the best of the presentation.
They also showed off a bit more of Days Gone. One of the big things for the game is using things around you to set traps and the like. that said, they added a new wrinkle at the end of the segment; zombie bears.
One of their surprises, however, was the reveal of Monster Hunter: World. The series has primarily been on Nintendo systems since Tri, barring the release of Portable 3 and Monster Hunter Online in Japan. It’s putting the power of the PS4 to good use, too. Stealth items seem to be big this time, and the vertical nature of 4 and Generations is still in, along with the swimming from Tri. The game looks like it’ll be a worthy addition to the series.
Shadow of the Colossus is getting another rerelease. As long as the horse doesn’t lose it’s mind over tiny rocks, I’ll be okay with it. Still, I’m hoping there’s more to it this time.
Aside from Call of Duty WWII, the next portion of the presentation was probably the weakest. They showed off a number of PlayStation VR games which mostly didn’t impress. Primarily because most of them don’t seem the sort to actually benefit from the VR. Moss looks like a decent game, though. Also, Skyrim is literally unkillable. And Final Fantasy XV is getting a fishing game.
God of War 4 made a showing. The Norse Myth angle seems to be working in its favor. What else was Kratos going to do after ruining the natural order of the world?
Detroit: Becoming Human reminds me of the common pitfalls of AI in fiction. Namely, that your microwave is suddenly start giving you lip. Also, is it just me, or does Marcus spread revolution in the same way Sigma spreads the Maverick Virus?
Destiny 2 has some exclusive goodies lined up for its PS4 release. Also, more of a story mode. should be good.
The final video of the presentation is the moneymaker. They showed off a new Spider-Man game. It’s quite possibly one of the few games where quicktime events are both appropriate and acceptable, too. The swinging looks good, the combat is as acrobatic as you’d expect, and the dialog is good. it blew pretty much everyone away.
Sony’s been on a roll when it comes to hitting Microsoft where it hurts. Sony’s presentation was the opposite of Microsoft’s. Concise, to the point, and hard hitting. And they didn’t try to sell us a car.
